Buddhists worldwide celebrate Vesak to mark 03 momentous events in Buddha’s life, his birth, enlightenment, and his death (Parinibbana). In parallel with International Vesak Day, Prison Officers Buddhists Association held a beautiful Vesak Zone from May 10 – 14, 2017 on Baseline Road in front of Prison Headquarters. Hon. Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, Mr.D.M.Swaminathan, on the invitation of the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr. Nishan Dhanasinghe, declared open the enchanting Vesak Pandol and colourful lanterns made by inmates from 27 prison institutes on May 10,2017 at 7.00 p.m. In additional Sectary to the Ministry, Mr. W.M.P.G.Wickremasinghe and several Prison officials witness this occasion.
Rice Dansela by the Magazine Prison on May 10, 2017 and another Rice Dansela by Colombo Remand Prison on May 11,2017, Sau Dansela by the Intelligence and Security Unit on May 12, 2017, Ice Cream Dansela by Prison Headquarters and Belimal Dansela by CRTC were held and a large number of people gathered enjoy free meals.
In addition, several other events including Vesak devotional sons (Bakthi Gee) attracted the public to Prison Vesak Zone.
