Mr. T.M.Jayasiri Wijenath Thennakoon who was appointed as the new Commissioner General of Prisons assumed duties 11th March 2019 after the Buddhist religious ceremony at Prison Headquarters. He served as an Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Labour previously. Read more


According to an idea of the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr. Nishan Dhanasinghe, distribution of dry rations among 35 helpless families effected by flood in the village of Ottusudan from Mullaitivu District was taken place on 26 February, 2019. Read more

Whole night pirith chanting & alms giving ceremony organized by the Galle Prison Buddhist Association under the guidance of Superintendent of Prisons was held to invoke blessing to  the His Excellency President and Government, Commissioner General of Prisons and all Prisons officers and their families and Prisons inmate.

Annual Friendly cricket match organized by the Prison Police Unit on the instruction of Mr. Malin Liyanage, Commissioner of Prisons was held on 27.01.2019 at the Prison Ground. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. Gamini Dissanayake, Chief Jailor, Mr.Susanta Rupasinghe and Jailor Mr. Chanaka Weerasinghe gave their priority in making match successful. Read more

A blood donation campaign was held by the Boossa Prison for the second time on 4th January 2019. On a concept of the Superintendent of Boossa Prisons, Mr. Pulina Mendis Karunarathna, 2nd blood donation campaign was held with the participation of officers from military, police and prison and villagers. Chief Jailor, Mr.Mangala Welivitiya and other prison officers had organaized this campaign. Read more

Championships of Over 40 Men’s Doubles Match and Women Group B Division Match were won by the Department of Prisons. Mr.Prasad Premathilaka and Mr.Kalana Chaminda won the championship of Over 40 Men’s Doubles Match and Ms.Subani Subasinghe, Ms.Chaturangani Jayawardana, Ms.Sanjeewani Thushara, Ms.Shama Rajapaksha, and Miss K.Wakkumbura represented the Women Group B Division Match. Inter Prison Badminton Tournament organized by the Welikada Prison was held on 10.11.2018 under the patronage of the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr.Nishan Danasinghe at the Prison Indoor Stadium. Mahara Prison won the trophy and Welikada Prison was the runner up and Prison Headquarters won the 3rd place. Read more

Fully equipped fitness center for prison officers and their families island wide was opened on 10.11.2018 at the Prison Indoor Stadium. On the invitation of the Superintendent of Welikada Prison, Mr.T.G.Uduwara, fitness center was opened under the patronage of the Head of the Power World, Mr.Thalawov Ali Leema and Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr.Nishan Danasinghe. Inmates from Vavuniya Prison celebrated Deepawali on 06th November, 2018. A majority of inmates from Vavuniya Prison are Tamil Hindus but, in terms of prison rules and regulations, steps were taken to celebrate Deepavali by all Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim inmates giving priority to Hindi Customs.  Read more

Galle Mayor, Mr.Priyantha Sahabandu a 1st citizen of the Galle Municipal Council expressed that he appreciated the social service done by the Superintendent of Prisons Galle Prison and this team going beyond their responsibilities. School student’s awareness program is a timely and meaningful program done on the concept of Superintendent of Galle, Mr. Jagath Chandana Weerasinghe.119 the program of “Noya yutu Thena” was played at the Galle Olcot Maha Vidyalaya and the Chief Guest to the Ceremony was the Major who said this.Read more

Diwali (Deepavali) was celebrated by boossa prison inmates on 07th November at the Boossa Prison Hindu Kovil. The Clergy, K.J.Deeshan Sarvanath Sharma Shami at Galle Kadireshwaram Kavil conducted the pooja with the participation of the Superintendent of Prisons,Boossa Mr. Pulina Mendis Karunathna.Read more

This workshop had mainly focused on correctional rehabilitation in prison system which was conducted by UNODC and Yellow Ribbon Conference in Singapore from 4th September 2018 to 8th September 2018. Read more


On behalf of the Prisoners Day on 12th September,collections of painting of prison Inmates Island wide were exhibited from 16th and 17th September, 2018 at the University of Visual & Performing Arts. Arts exhibition “ Sira Nouw Situwam” organized under the guidance of the Commissioner of Prisons (Rehabilitation),Mr.Chandana Ekanayake,plays an important role in the process rehabilitating inmates. 38th Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators (APCCA-2018) was held in Malaysia from 2nd to 7th, September 2018. Conference holds each year and Sri Lanka also gets a chance to participate to the conference. The Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr,Nishan Dhanasinghe,  Commissioners of Prisons, Mr.Thusara Upuldeniya, Assistant Superintendent of Welikada Prison,  Mr.S.K.Pallethenna and the Assistant Superintendent of Bossa Prison, Mr.L.M.P.Karunarathna represented Sri Lanka.Read more
