The President, Maithripala Sirisena declared a National Food Production Week aimed at expediting toxin free food production under the theme of “Yali Api Negitimu, Atu Kotu Purawamu”. The Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr.Nishan Dhanasinghe planted a plant and made a speech on the topic of importance of being self sufficient in food production.  All Prison Headquarters staff witnessed this event. 50 hours Tamil Language Course for officers in the Department of Prisons resourced by the Department of Official Languages was held at the Center for Research and Training in Correction. Read more

“Noya Yuthu Thena”, Counselling Service for school students held by the Galle Prison was held very successfully at the Deniyaya National School. St.Mathiv College, and Rajepaksha College. Read more

It was the Prisoners Welfare Day fell on September 12,2017 when week of several religious, spiritual, educational, sports, health programs, family get together and Sramadana programs have been introduced by the commissioner General of Prisons carried out so as to temper lives of prisoners in better way. According to a concept of the Assistant Superintendent of Weeravila Work Camp, Mr. B.D.M.Gamini Bandara Dissanayake, a memorial that was built to commemorate prison officers died while on duty, was declared open on August 19, 2017 by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr.Nishan Dhanasinghe as the Chief Guest. Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Chief Jailor together with prison officers’ have organized the ceremony.Read more

Prison Colour Night 2017 was held at the Colombo Kingsbury Hotel on August 05, 2017 at 5.00 P.M. Hon. Minister of Prisons Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, Mr. D.M.Swaminathan graced the occasion as the chief guest. Read more

Inter Prison Sport Carnival held in parallel with 112th Prison Day of the Department of Prisons was celebrated on 22nd  July, 2017 at Wesley College Play Ground-Colombo.

It has been 112 years since the separation of Sri Lanka Prisons from the Department of Police on July16,1905 and blood donation campaign was held on July 14,2017 at the Weeravila Prison for the second time under the patronage of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Mr. B.D.M.G.B.Dissanayake, Chief Jailor, Mr. E.S.Premalal and Weeravila Prison Officers together with villagers and State institutes in the area. Here, Blood Bank Staff from the Hambantota Base Hospital gave their fullest cooperation in accomplishing the task and 63 bighearted peoples donated blood. Read more

In line with 112th Prison Day, a great event was held in front of the commemorative monument at the Welikada Prison to commemorate Prison officers who sacrificed their lives while on duty with honour, love and gratitude. Read more


In line with the prison day celebrations and completion of 112 years of prison service to the nation, a variety of programs island wide were held at the Department of Prisons. Meanwhile, Boossa Prison cleaned its Boossa Kandurupe Road and drainage system under guidance of the Assistant Superintendent of Boossa Prison,Mr. L.P.M.Karunaratne.  Read more

Under the island wide program of home donation to a poor prisoner on centenary celebration of Sri Lanka Prisoners Welfare Association, a home which was built by the Bossa Prison Authority and Bossa Prisoners Welfare Association was donated under the patronage of the Commissioner General  of Prisons, Mr.Nishan Dhanasinghe.  Read more

A workshop on soap production for officers of Industry Division of the Department of Prisons was held under the guidance of the Commissioner of Prisons (Industry and Skill Development) Mr.Emil Ranjan Lamahewage and Director Training, Mr.M.F.Lahir on 30th June 2017 at CRTC.  Read more

Induction Residential Training for officers at the Department of Prisons who were promoted to the Post of Jailor and Rehabilitation Officer Class 11, was conducted from May 15 to June 14, 2017 at the Centre for Research and Training in Correction (CRTC).  Read more

Prisoner’s Welfare Association of Galle Prison was awarded the Sam Wijesinghe Visista Seva medal for its commendable service rendered towards the welfare, rehabilitation, wellbeing and correction of prison inmates, by the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. Maithripala Sirisena on 13th June 2017 at the BMICH.   Read more

The Cricket teams representing Department of Prisons and Department of Police were qualified for the final match at the State Service cricket tournament of this year. This final match was held at the Mahara Prison ground on 8th  May 2017. The cricket team of Department of Prisons won the trophy by three wickets against strong Police Department’s team.Read more

Under the guidance of Superintendent of Boossa Prison, Mr. L.P.M.Karunarathne, inmates from boossa Prison cultivated two bushels paddy field in extent of about 09 acres with tea, coconut and cinnamon cultivations, managed by the Boossa Prison and belonging to the Department of Prisons and harvested the other day at the Deesi Valley State, Akmimana.
