Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara was appointed to the post of Acting Commissioner General of Prisons of
the Department of Prisons on April 2, 2026.

He joined the Department of Prisons in 2013 as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. He, subsequently received promotions as a Superintendent of Prisons, Special Grade Superintendent of Prisons, and Senior Superintendent of Prisons .Throughout his career, he has served at several prisons, including Trincomalee, Wariyapola, Bogambara, Kegalle, New Magazine, and Mahara prisons.

In 2023, Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara served as the Director of the Research and Correctional Training Centre. In 2024, he was promoted to Commissioner of Prisons, overseeing the Supplies and Services Division as well as the Operations and Intelligence Division. Later, he served as the Additional Commissioner General of Prisons before being appointed to his current role as the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons. An alumnus of Ibbagamuwa Central College, he holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, a Bachelor of Science (Special) Degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a National Diploma in Human Resource Management, and a Certificate in Banking and Financial Management.

Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara has also represented Sri Lanka at numerous local and international training programs and conferences on prison administration. Throughout his professional career, he fulfilled an enormous contribution towards the benefit of both prison officers and inmates.
