Hon. Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law, Mr.Harshana Nanayakkara, was on an observation tour to investigate the current situation at Welikada and Magazine Prisons in Colombo.

Hon. Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law, Mr.Harshana Nanayakkara, was on
an observation tour to Welikada and Magazine Prisons in Colombo on 27.03.2025 to investigate the
current situation there.

Minister’s special attention was also drawn to how rehabilitation and welfare activities of prison inmates
work, overcrowding of inmates in prisons due to legal and policy issues as well as common facilities
provided to inmates and threats and problems to life faced by prison officers in course of their duties.
Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, Mr. H.M.N.C. Dhanasinghe,
Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr.Thushara Upuldeniya, Commissioner of Prisons (Operations and
Intelligence), Mr.Gamini Dissanayake, Commissioner of Prisons (Rehabilitation) Mr.Jagath
Weerasinghe, Commissioner of Prisons (Industry) Mr.S.K. Pallethenna, Superintendent of Welikada
Prison, Mr.Nimal Shantha, Superintendent of Magazine Prison, Mr.H.M.S.N. Upuldeniya and many
senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and National Integration and the Department of Prisons
participated to the special occasion.
