In commemoration of the 2570th Vesak Poya Day, a series of Vesak programs were held by the Colombo prisons at the Prison Headquarters.
A Vesak lantern competition organized by the Buddhist Association of the Department of Prisons was held at the Welikada Prison with the participation from all prisons islandwide.1 st place of the competition were awarded to the Polonnaruwa Prison, 2nd Place to Jaffna Prison and 3rd Place
to Kegalle Prison.
In parallel to these celebrations, Belimal Dansala organized by the officers of the Prison Headquarters, was held on May 30, 2026. Also, Manioc (Cassava) Dansala was held on May 31, 2026, organized by the New Magazine Prison with the assistance of the Welikada Prison, Colombo Remand Prison, and the Emergency Response Tactical Force.
These inaugural ceremonies were attended by a large number of prison officers, including the Commissioner General of Prisons, Prison Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Prisons, and Superintendents of Prisons.
